This is a gluten free mushroom gravy that can be used as a drop in replacement for any brown gravy. It is delicious and hearty.

  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter
  • 8oz sliced mushrooms (You can use fresh mushrooms if you like, but I use canned and they work just fine.)
  • 1/3 cup white rice flour (We use Bob's Red Mill white rice flour.)
  • 32fl oz beef broth (We use Swanson's. Make sure it is a gluten free variety.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme

Step 1 Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Step 2 Once the butter is melted and sizzling, add mushrooms to the saucepan.
Step 3 Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are nice and browned and most of the liquid is cooked up. This usually takes 10-15 minutes over medium heat.
Step 4 Add the white rice flour to the mushrooms and cook an additional 5-10 minutes.
Step 5 Add between 1/4 and 1/2 of the total beef broth to the flour mixture and stir until the rue is well incorporated.
Step 6 Add the rest of the broth, pepper, and thyme, stirring well.
Step 7 Reduce heat slightly and cook for 30 minutes, stirring often.
Step 8 Remove from heat and enjoy on your food of choice.
